Local climate group meets to 'recharge democracy'

Extinction Rebellion Haringey will be meeting to follow-up on a Haringey Hunger March earlier this year, reports Olivia Opara

A local climate action group is organising a community event to discuss the impact of the climate and nature crisis in Haringey.

On Saturday, 25th November, Extinction Rebellion Haringey will be holding a community assembly alongside the Haringey Community Action Network (HCAN) and Haringey Right to Food. The aim of the assembly is to bring residents, community groups and organisations together to discuss issues of the climate and nature crisis and the impacts these are having on Haringey residents.

Jane Leggett, from Extinction Rebellion Haringey, said: “Community assemblies offer a fundamental shift, recharging local democracy by enabling all residents to realise our power, lend our experience, find our voices and be heard.”

The assembly comes as a follow up to a daylong workshop hosted by HCAN last June at the Alvei Centre in which “the climate crisis and biodiversity loss was one of the central discussions,” said Steve Jones, convenor of HCAN.

Steve added: “Other workshops were on poverty, migrant justice, health and care, housing and trade unions and the fight against austerity. The workshop directly helped us build for the amazing Haringey Right to Food march on September 23rd.”

Carmel Cadden, Unite Community, and one of the coordinators of Haringey Climate and Nature Emergency Network, said: “Our action group believes that poverty, food poverty, cost of living crisis and migration-asylum seeking are all related to climate and nature emergencies.

“It is vital that we work together to ensure that our council and our government prepare themselves to act swiftly to prepare and protect us against the deepening crisis.”

The Haringey Climate and Nature Emergency Network is a climate action group that formed as a result of HCAN’s climate workshop and the members continue to meet at the Alevi Centre.

The assembly will take place at the Kurdish Community Centre, N4 1HU, from 12pm to 4pm. A meal will be provided by Haringey Right to Food.
