Muswell Hill store shortlisted for ‘indie bookshop of the year’

The Children’s Bookshop turns 51 this year

A Muswell Hill bookshop has been shortlisted for ‘independent bookshop of the year’ for the second time running.

The Children’s Bookshop is up for the ‘Nibbie’ for a second time after being shortlisted in The British Book Awards 2023.

Nine other London bookshops have been shortlisted for the category, including Burley Fisher Books and The Common Press. 77 independent bookshops have been shortlisted overall.

Tom Tivnan, The Bookseller managing editor, said: “One of the things that is driven home by the selection process for this award is how lucky book buyers in the UK and Ireland are as we are truly in an independent bookshop renaissance. This year’s cohort is one of the strongest I have seen in my 15 years judging this award. Indies have come out of the pandemic and into a cost-of-living and business rates crises, yet still through innovation and creativity thrive as never before.”

The Children’s Bookshop turns 51 this year and has long been a staple of the Muswell Hill high street.

Sanchita Basu De Sarkar, owner, commented: “I firmly believe we’re leaders in the children’s book trade – fuelled by passion, commitment, and changing the lives of children day by day. For this reason I feel we’re the perfect candidate for best indie bookshop, having led the way from strength to strength for 50 years – and we can’t wait for whatever’s next.”

The British Book Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony at Grosvenor House on Monday, 13th May.
