Tottenham college reveals expansion plans

New construction and engineering centre proposed at College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London site, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

A Tottenham college could be getting a new construction and engineering centre double the size of the gym and lecture theatre it will replace.

Capital City College Group (CCCG) has submitted an application to demolish the gym and lecture theatre block located towards the back of its Tottenham campus and replace it with a five-storey engineering centre 2,625 square metres in size.

College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (Conel), run by CCCG, is a further educational facility offering an “extensive range” of academic and vocational courses for young people aged over 16.

The expansion proposal for Conel’s Tottenham Green Centre states the college’s vision is to provide “state-of-the-art” workshop spaces for its vocational courses and the design of the centre has been “distilled” through a series of engagement meetings.

Some of the features of the construction and engineering centre include engineering labs, robotics labs and supporting classrooms.

Public consultation events took place in January with twelve local residents, ten members of college staff and one councillor attending. There was support voiced for the need for a new building in order to “deliver the growing demand” for construction courses.

Attendees felt the building’s design was not “important” as it could “hardly be seen” by the general public, but it was necessary it blended in with existing buildings.

CCCG says issues raised relating to the building’s mass, views towards the development, materials, and masterplan strategy have now been “addressed” in the scheme now submitted for consideration.
