Finsbury Park Station goes step-free

Work to make the station more accessible is now complete, reports Miriam Balanescu

Work to make Finsbury Park step-free has now been completed, Network Rail have announced.

Two new lifts have opened on platforms 3/4 and 7/8, meaning all platforms now have step-free access. The move is aimed at making the station fully accessible to those unable to use stairs to and from platforms, enabling more people to travel.

Those with limited mobility, pushchairs, luggage or bikes should now be able to use the station more easily.

Network Rail began work on the site in summer 2021 as part of the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme, in partnership with Govia Thameslink Railway and Transport for London.

Work has also been undertaken to improve lighting, CCTV and signage, as well as the installation of tactile paving and the movement of the gate line from Platform 3/4 to the entrance in Station Place, in a bid to improve travel through the station.

Rail minister Huw Merriman said: “Passengers deserve an inclusive, accessible railway and it’s great to see these essential upgrades have been completed under the department’s Access for All programme.

“The improvements at Finsbury Park are testament to our ambition of ensuring everyone has equal access to our transport network.”

Luke Durston, principal programme Ssonsor for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “Finsbury Park is a key location on the Northern City Line and a strategic interchange for services across London.

“Knowing that passengers will now be able to enjoy step-free access across the whole station is brilliant and will allow more people to enjoy travelling by train.”

Jenny Saunders, customer services director for Great Northern and Thameslink, said: “We’re constantly striving to remove barriers to make our services easier for everyone to use, so we’re delighted for our passengers that Finsbury Park is now step-free between every platform and the street. We’ve also recently completed some safety improvements with new non-slip stair and subway surfaces that complement the major access scheme.

“These new lifts and other station enhancements will improve journeys for many thousands of people.”
