Spurs submit bid to double number of large non-football events at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The move could mean up to 30 events such as pop concerts being held at the stadium every year, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Tottenham Hotspur have proposed nearly doubling the number of ‘major non-football events’ held at its stadium annually.

Spurs are applying to Haringey Council to increase the number of large events such as concerts held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – attracting 10,000 or more visitors – from 16 to 30 per year.

This would include up to two boxing events, while placing limits on the number of concerts being held consecutively.

Last summer, Beyoncé played five sold-out concerts at the stadium within the space of a week. Other performers at the stadium since it opened in 2019 have included Gun N’ Roses, Lady Gaga and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Several NFL games have also been staged there.

The Spurs planning application forms part of the Premier League club’s wider ‘Northumberland Development Project’, a mixed-use programme that centres around the football stadium.

The plan comprises up to 1,500 new homes, a 180-bed hotel, and leisure and cultural facilities that are all at various stages of development.

The change to annual event numbers follows a recent proposal to increase the height of the hotel planned next to the stadium, from 23 to 29 storeys, which was approved by councillors in April.

Consultations on the event delivery plan began in early 2023, with a public exhibition subsequently being held in February this year.

According to Tottenham Hotspurs’ planning statement, of those who submitted feeback, 66% were supportive of the “principle of additional events”, 25% were opposed, and 9% said they were undecided.

But concerns include exacerbated traffic issues, events conflicting with religious holidays, the need for community groups and charities to be more involved in the events so they can benefit, and concern at the potential of having multiple events in a single week.

More information on the scheme can be found via Haringey Council’s planning portal using reference number HGY/2024/1008.
