Issue 5 out now – Tottenham gets together

Letter from the Editor, Ellie Rae Ward:

Recent events, from the horrific fire at Grenfell Tower to the attacks at Tower Bridge and Finsbury Park, provide us with a stark reminder of the importance of community strength. The world has looked on at our capital city during these extremely testing times.

The citizens of London have experienced heartbreak and anguish, but they’ve also witnessed resilience and kindness on an unprecedented scale.  People have risked their lives to save others, given food and clothes to those whose homes have been destroyed and stood in silence to show solidarity with those whose lives have been lost.

It seemed more poignant a time than ever for neighbours and strangers to get together across the country in celebration of their shared values, which is exactly what happened in Tottenham and elsewhere. Around 120,000 Great Get Together events took place in memory of the MP Jo Cox who was killed last year, including one at the Tottenham Green Market. Continue reading all about it on page 3.

Also in this issue, we hear what students from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North London want re-elected MP David Lammy to prioritise in the coming months. While the general election might be over and done with, local democracy by no means comes to a halt. Green Party candidate Jarelle Francis explains how and why he got involved in local politics, and explains how you can too.
