Customers urged to follow safety advice as shops reopen

Customers are being asked to shop safely as high streets in Haringey get back to business.

Shoppers have been urged to stay two metres apart, pay using contactless cards and only touch goods they intend to buy to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

High street retailers opened their doors on Monday (June 15) with extra safety measures in place to protect customers.

Shopkeepers have been given guidance on introducing screens, one-way systems and other safeguards – many of which are already in place at retailers that were previously allowed to stay open.

Haringey council has set up a queue system in Wood Green, while a traffic-light system in place at The Mall has been designed to keep footfall to a manageable level.

The council said early indications suggest the reopening of shops has gone “relatively well so far,” with customers and businesses acting responsibly – although queues have formed outside popular high-street retailers.

Cllr Gideon Bull (Labour, White Hart Lane), cabinet member for local investment and economic growth, said it was “fantastic” to see shops reopening.

Cllr Bull added: “I am calling on shoppers to support our amazing local businesses, but to do it safely, by following on-site instructions and staying at least two metres apart.

“Wherever possible, please make contactless payments using your credit or debit card and only touch or pick up items you intend to purchase. Taking these steps will help us keep our shops open by preventing the spread of the coronavirus.”
