Council supporting people who were evacuated after building collapse

Haringey Council is providing support for people who had to leave their homes after a building collapsed, killing a workman.

A site worker was pronounced dead at the scene in Vale Road, N4 after becoming trapped under concrete when the two-storey industrial building, which was being demolished, partly collapsed on Tuesday afternoon (4th August).

42 people were evacuated from a nearby building, Haringey Council said.

The local authority has provided temporary accommodation for the 25 people who need it.

Police, fire crews and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) attended the scene. The HSE is leading enquiries.

Following the incident, council staff set up a rest centre and have been providing support and assistance for those affected.

Cllr Seema Chandwani, Haringey Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “This is devastating news and my heart goes out to the friends and family of the man who has so sadly died.

“The emergency services attended the scene and the HSE are leading investigations. As a council we are supporting residents who needed to evacuate their homes nearby – we have found temporary accommodation for all those who need it at this very challenging time.”
