Ally Pally event aiming to 'demystify death'

Coffin Club is a free event for people who want to find out more about death

An event starting at Alexandra Palace today (Tuesday) aims to “demystify death”.

Coffin Club was set up in 2018 by local funeral celebrants Jane Morgan and Ruth Valentine, end-of-life doula Sandra Greenyer, and artist Susan Beattie.

It invites Haringey residents to sit down over coffee and cake to discuss funerals, with advisors on hand to answer questions about doing justice to the person who has died, how to keep costs down and, perhaps more surprisingly, how to choose and decorate your own coffin.

Coffin Clubs aim to “demystify the business of death, dying and funerals, and bring creativity and even joy to the knowledge that we’re all going to get there”.

The event runs on different dates throughout May. Participants can book for one session or all of them. Subjects tackled will include coffin painting, planning a funeral ceremony, wills and lasting powers of attorney, the role of a hospice, the work of an end-of-life doula, supporting a dying person, and sharing thoughts about death and bereavement.

All the workshops are free of charge and everyone is welcome. Tea, coffee, and the famous Coffin Club cake will be provided.

A previous participant with Coffin Club said: “This is about me taking charge. It’s for anyone who wants their funeral and death to be more personal.”
