Tottenham Hotspur players are set to raise awareness for Tottenham Foodbank at today’s match.

During today’s UEFA Champions League match against Sporting Clube de Portugal, Tottenham Hotspur players will be wearing special edition shirts with printed logos of Tottenham Foodbank as part of an ongoing campaign to raise donations.

Being a long-term supporter of local foodbanks in Tottenham and Enfield, the club’s  campaign is delivered in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Fans will also be encouraged to make a donation by texting COYSFOODBANK plus an amount to 70085* (for example, text COYSFOODBANK 10 to donate £10).

Club captain Hugo Lloris said: “To be able to wear the Tottenham Foodbank logo on the back of our shirts on the biggest of stages on Wednesday night is a huge show of support from the Club and its players to an organisation that delivers so much for local people most in need.

“We know our fans are huge supporters of the local foodbanks as well and, with an audience of millions watching us and seeing the shirt, we aim to raise even further awareness of this fantastic cause ahead of a tough winter ahead for so many.”

Holding regular matchday donation collections at the Tottenham Community Sports Centre, Tottenham Foodbank provides emergency food parcels of at least three days worth of nutritionally balanced meals for individuals and families in the community.

In May 2022, the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) found that 93% of its organisations – which are independent foodbanks across 94 local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales – had seen a significant rise in the demand for their services. Echoing this, the Trussell Trust, a charity  that operates more than half of the food banks in the country, reported that the need for food banks in its network has increased by 81%, compared to five years ago. Currently a foodbank parcel is handed out every 13 seconds in the UK; with the cost of living crisis forcing many more households into financially precarious situations, this is set to increse in the coming months.

Tottenham Foodbank is a part of the Trussell Trust network, and in the last six months alone it has seen an 55% increase in demand for its services. Ahead of this winter, Tottenham Foodbank is crowdfunding to raise £100,000 to help provide fuel vouchers to those most vulnerable in Haringey.

Tonye Philemon, Tottenham Foodbank Manager, said: “The [football] club’s continued support of Tottenham Foodbank has been instrumental, enabling us to provide help within our local community. Having our logo on the player’s back is not only a visual symbol of this support, but also a great opportunity to raise awareness of our important work. Long-term support is what we need to ensure we can help our vulnerable neighbours.”

Tottenham Hotspur fans are also able to show their support by making a donation to Tottenham Foodbank online via its dedicated fundraising page: tottenham.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-money/
