A fire forced the evacuation of a tower block in Northumberland Park on Friday night.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled the flat fire on the sixth floor of Kenneth Robbins House, treating one person at the scene for smoke inhalation, with two others escaping before London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived.

Olivia Opara, HCP’s community reporter for Tottenham, was at the scene and said on Twitter: “Echoes of concerns regarding the safety of the building as residents stand out in the cold with worry about their home as some recall the incident of Grenfell Tower.”

LFB station commander Chris Kendall said: “Firefighters worked hard in hot, challenging conditions to tackle a very intense fire.

“Due to heavy congestion, we urged people to avoid the area.

“The blaze was producing smoke and we advised those in the vicinity to close their windows and doors.

“One of the brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as an observation platform and as a water tower.”

LFB was called at 6.20pm and the fire was under control by 8.11pm. Fire crews from Tottenham, Edmonton, Holloway and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Haringey Council posted on Twitter that it was supporting local residents. It said: “Following a fire at Kenneth Robbins House in Northumberland Park tonight, council staff have been supporting the emergency services and evacuated residents at the scene. The fire is now under control and we will be providing emergency accommodation to four households overnight.”
