The man sustained head injuries which left him hospitalised for seven months

A company has been fined £175,000 after a worker sustained serious head injuries while onsite in Crouch End.

The man had been working on a domestic property on Elmfield Avenue in Crouch End on 3rd March 2019 when he was injured during concrete pumping operations carried out by sub-contractor Singh Will Mix It Ltd.

The incident occurred after a pump became blocked, leading to a sudden release of pressure where the pump then struck the worker on the head. It was revealed that the pump operator was not qualified to operate the machine.

Following this, the worker was hospitalised for seven months, suffering brain trauma and continuing to experience difficulties with speech, memory and movement.

An investigation was carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), finding Singh Will Mix It Ltd had failed to ensure workers had the necessary knowledge, skills and training required, as well as appropriate health and safety systems in place.

Singh Will Mix It Ltd, of Larkshall Road, Walthamstow, was found guilty of breaching Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 following a trial at Southwark Crown Court. The company was ordered to pay £75,722 in costs at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, 15th March 2023.

HSE inspector Gordon Nixon said: “HSE will not hesitate in prosecuting where contractors and operatives do not have the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and training when carrying out dangerous tasks and putting people at risk.”
