A sinkhole which opened up overnight in Crouch End has puzzled local residents and caused congestion chaos.

The sinkhole, which first appeared on Weston Park Road in the morning of Friday, 14th April, is yet to be repaired by Haringey Council.

Colin, a builder working across the road when he spotted a van drop into the hole, posted a picture of the damaged tarmac to Facebook. “[There was a vehicle] coming out of a parked position for builders working locally – and he went down in it and managed to climb out luckily.”

He added: “You could see underneath it from the side and you could see the chasm below much further than where the tarmac had broken off. I said to the chap you need to move back because you’re only standing on six inches of [tarmac] – underneath you there’s nothing.

“A police car drove past us, missing it by about six or seven inches.”

Colin says police quickly attended the scene, and the road now remains cordoned off.

“I haven’t seen it since – I wouldn’t want to be driving in that direction!”

The cause of the sinkhole remains unknown. Colin noted the river running nearby, which may be connected to the issue.

The council has been approached for comment and have not yet set a date for when the damage will be fixed.
