A green-fingered Tottenham resident will be hosting an ‘open garden day’ to raise money for a national charity .

Matthew Bradby is opening his ornamental back garden to the public this Saturday (13th) as part of the National Garden Scheme, to help raise money for charity and connect with the wider community.

Located in Gospatrick Road, Matthew’s garden is a diverse 40-metre plot featuring a large weeping willow tree, palms, camellias, ferns and climbing roses. Within his garden is a smaller fruit and herb garden with Japanese bananas, grapevines, bay and mimosa trees. He also has a greenhouse which houses succulent plants and various others.

Matthew, who wants to promote the benefits of gardening and its impact, told HCP: “I think that gardening is so good for your physical and your mental health and it is something that keeps you active and something that keeps you interested.”

Running for almost 100 years, National Garden Scheme raises money for nursing and health charities by allowing communities unique access to more than 3,500 private gardens across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands every year.

Since 1927, the scheme has donated more than £67million to a range of charities including The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie.

As part of the open day on Saturday, visitors will have the chance to tour Matthew’s garden and connect with others over tea and cake. There will also be a plant sale through which Matthew will be selling plants that he grew himself, such as iris and jasmine.

“There is always something to do and more to learn when gardening,” said Mathew, who has always had a passion for gardening. “I think that everyone, if you have the opportunity, should try to get out there in green spaces and meet other people who are interested in gardening and enjoy it.”

Matthew’s garden will be open from 1pm to 5pm at 21 Gospatrick Road, near Waltheof Avenue. Entry is £4 and you can book your tickets in advance here or pay at the door on the day.
