Cancer patients’ charity Wigs for Heroes seeks local support

The Tottenham charity is calling for local residents’ votes in a bid to receive future funding, reports Olivia Opara

A Tottenham-based community group is calling on local people to help them secure £75,000 of funding by voting for them in a nationwide competition.

Wigs For Heroes is a grassroots organisation that supports people undergoing cancer treatment across the UK and is one of five groups in London to shortlisted to receive a share of almost £75,000 of funding, which the charity hopes to use to deliver a new project, ‘The Heroes Haven’.

‘The Heroes Heaven’ project would utilise retail and community spaces in Haringey to provide services such as wigs fittings, workshops and support groups for people living with cancer. The project also aims to engage the wider community to further support those with cancer.

The fund comes as part of this year’s The People’s Project competition for which the National Lottery, ITV/UTV and the Sunday Mail in Scotland have partnered to give the public a chance to decide how over £4million in National Lottery funding should be put to good use in their local area.

Today (11th May) at 6pm a documentary about Wigs For Heroes’ ‘The Heroes Haven’ project will be aired on ITV’s regional news where viewers get to learn more about the organisation and the project.

Kaz Foncette, founder of Wigs for Heroes, said: “The People’s Projects has given us an amazing opportunity to raise awareness and support for our work and, with your help, secure this additional much-needed funding.

“If we win, our project will make a real difference to our local community by finally allowing people affected by cancer in Haringey, a safe space they feel understood and supported, a place the local borough is in desperate need of. We now need local people to get behind us, to show their support and vote.”

David Knott, chief executive of the National Lottery Community Fund, said: “The short-listed groups are truly inspirational, each delivering life-changing support to their community in different ways.”

“It is now time for the public to have their say in how vital National Lottery funding is used in their area to make a difference to people’s lives, particularly in these challenging times.”

Voting opens at 9am on Monday,15th May at www.thepoeplesprojects.org.uk and closes at noon on Friday, 26th.
