Students celebrate after A-level results day in Tottenham

Students earned their place at top tier universities with teachers saying their grades as as good ‘as they have ever been’, reports Olivia Opara

A Tottenham sixth form has celebrated A-Level results day as many students head off to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

Today (17th August), London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (LAET) has been left proud of its year 13 cohort A-level results with two-thirds heading off to Russell Group universities this September. 45 students will be attending Oxford and Cambridge, with 17 students going on to study medicine and dentistry.

Stephen Bovey, assistant headteacher at LAET, said: “The picture that we got today is that we are very pleased with all the destinations that our students have gotten into. As expected with a cohort that has never taken a formal exam, they were very nervous about their exams and when it came to it, they did well and as a group have met their target grades.

“LAET students are going to exciting places and we have strong performances in As and A*s. Our A* to B numbers are as good as they have ever been. We will hopefully finish the day with everyone ending up with a place that they can be really proud of.”

Simon Maunder, lead biology teacher who oversees medicine applications, told HCP that this year’s cohort have gone through a “tough few years” going through Covid-19, family pressures and grade boundaries having gone up.

“For these kids to have gotten high grades and go off to do medicine, I wish that they did not have to work harder than some of their more privileged peers,” said Simon.  “I feel like having met those adversities, they have learnt a lot about who they are and what type of studying works for them. So I hope that they will go on better for it and that this raises their feeling about themselves. I am just so proud of them.”

Jan Balon, headteacher at LAET, said: “I think that the hardest thing was that these sets of exams were their first proper exams but nevertheless there are at least two-thirds of them going to Russell group universities.”

“So many of them have done really well despite the challenges and their results are something to be proud of. It is great to see Haringey students go on and do great things.”
