The protesters are attacking what they have called Labour’s “empty pledges” when it comes to climate policies, reports Miriam Balanescu

Climate activists today protested what they have called Labour’s ‘empty pledges’ when it comes to their environmental policies – marking the first in a series of protests outside the Tottenham office of David Lammy MP.
At 12.30pm today (18th August), protesters held placards as part of a national campaign by Green New Deal Rising outside the shadow secretary of state’s office in a bid to get him to “commit to doing more in the face of the climate and ecological emergency”.
Ahead of a UK general election, rotesters are demanding that the Labour party commit to passing legislation which expands public ownership, taxes wealth, delivers a green jobs guarantee and a living income, enacts a “national nature service” and “makes polluters pay globally in the first 100 days after the election”.
Protests will be held weekly by the group on Fridays.
Wesley Milligan, 31, a member of the group from London said: “David Lammy himself said the Labour Party would ‘create a new international law of ecocide to criminalise the destruction of the environment.’ Yet we see no signs that he or the Labour Party would abide by such a law if elected. We’re doing these weekly sit-outs to demand that Labour make clear, decisive and specific climate commitments. No more empty pledges. No more backsliding. These weekly sit-outs will be fun and peaceful events, with activities, themes, crafts and performances. A brilliant demonstration of the passion young people have for climate justice.”
Lammy’s office has been contacted for comment.
