A new study has revealed that Haringey residents are waiting 249 days on average to hear back about disabled facilities grants.

Oak Tree Mobility collected data from councils around the UK through a series of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, finding that in Haringey 670 applications were received and 570 accepted. Despite the high acceptance rate, Haringey Council took 249 days on average to make a decision – over 200 days more than the UK average of 46, calculated from data provided by 108 councils.

Disabled facilities grants are provided by councils to help those with disabilities to make changes to their home, including: widening doors and installing ramps or grab rails; improving access to rooms and facilities, for example with a stairlift, or level access shower; building an extension, for example a downstairs bedroom; providing a heating system suitable for special needs; adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use.

A total of £5,277,685.32 was awarded in grants in Haringey, with the average per applicant estimated to be £9,242.88.

London received £70,185,317 in disability facilities grants over the past five years, the highest amount awarded to any region in the UK.

Haringey Council was approached for comment.
