This Wednesday, 4th October, Haringey Council will be holding a by-election for the White Hart Lane ward.

This comes following Labour councillor Yvonne Say’s resignation for “personal reasons” on Friday, 18th August.

Four candidates will stand in the upcoming by-election, including representatives for the Liberal Democrats, Labour, Green Party and Conservative and Unionist Party. Haringey Community Press attempted to speak to all four candidates.

David Vigoureaux – Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrat candidate David Vigoureaux wants to be a councillor who works closely with and listens to residents to “end the complacency of the local Labour Party who have taken the area for granted for too long”.

David, who has lived in the area since 2019, plans to bring “new ideas” to create change and focus on addressing fly-tipping, address road and traffic safety and be a “local champion” for the community.

Liam Carroll – Labour

Labour candidate Liam Carrol plans to “improve White Hart Lane” by focusing on enhancing green spaces, support the council to deliver more council homes and “stand up for issues that matter” to local residents.

Liam has worked for nationwide charities on drug and alcohol treatment, domestic abuse, and homelessness and has worked with other councils, encouraging them to adopt evidence-based solutions to social problems.

Friedrich Ernst – Green Party

Green Party candidate Friedrich Ernst is standing in the by-election to “give voters the chance to vote for a Green candidate” and plans to campaign for more tree planting and preservation of green spaces in the ward, oppose the development of the New Road Park, and garner support for a local energy supply to tackle the climate emergency.

Friedrich is local to White Hart Lane and also wants to see support for local groups, more play space and streets for children and better provision for waste collections.

James Barton – Conservatives

James did not respond to requests for comment.
