Ashley Bashar “sent numerous messages of an increasingly personal nature” to the victim of domestic abuse, reports Louis Altmann

A former police constable who worked in Enfield and Haringey has been found guilty of gross misconduct after making inappropriate advances towards a victim of crime.

Between April and November of 2020, Ashley Bashar “sent numerous messages of an increasingly personal nature” to a domestic abuse victim, according to the Met.

He was persistent with his messages, sending further texts when he was ignored.

Bashar was also investigated in 2018 for similar behaviour, contacting a crime victim using his personal phone. In that instance, he was recommended for “further training” by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The Met say that had Bashar not resigned from the police in November 2022, he would have been dismissed as a result of the misconduct hearing.

Bashar will now be placed on the College of Policing’s barred list, which means he is banned indefinitely from serving as a police officer. Those placed on the list for gross misconduct dismissals cannot request a review for at least five years.

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, commander for the north area command unit which covers Enfield and Haringey, said: “The actions of PC Bashar have undoubtedly fallen below the standards that are expected of any officers within the Met and I am appalled that he neglected his responsibilities to safeguard someone he had a duty to protect.

“I welcome the outcome of today’s hearing and recognise that officers such as PC Bashar have no place in the Met.

“His actions have completely undermined the majority of hard working, diligent and professional officers who serve the communities of London.

“As police officers we have a duty to provide the public with the best service possible and that standard cannot be met by anyone who abuses their position in the way PC Bashar did.”
