Progress on eight North London community energy projects

The funding from mayor of London Sadiq Khan ‘give[s] London a chance of meeting Net Zero’

New figures from London Assembly have revealed that the grants that eight community energy schemes in Haringey and Enfield received from mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

New River Sports Centre (£4,500 towards solar panels), Fortismere Project (£4,350 towards solar panels), Summerland Gardens (£15,000 towards a solar canopy) and Greening the Green (£7,240 towards ‘greening’ the Muswell Hill Golf Club) were chosen in previous rounds of the London Community Energy Fund.

In the 2023/24 round of funding, Wolves Lane Consortium’s have secured up to £33,056 towards the installation of a 40kW of solar PV and air-source heat-pump at their community centre and growing space in Haringey. The project will avoid around 8.5 tonnes CO2e per year and save the site £6,000 a year in running costs, allowing them to scale up activities including food growing training, healthy cooking classes, school visits.

Local organisation En10ergy previously conducted a drone survey of the New River Sports Centre – however, solar panels have not yet been installed.

Progress has also been halted on solar panels in the car park at Summerland Gardens.

The project at Fortismere has been completed, with the launch attended by Catherine West MP.

The grants were awarded by mayor of London Sadiq Khan as part of investment towards Net Zero London.

Figures from the London Assembly show Khan has invested in 167 projects.

Joanne McCartney, London Assembly member for Haringey and Enfield, said: “Given rising energy costs and a climate emergency, we know that community energy projects are more important than ever.

“I’m thrilled to see our area benefit from this scheme. These eight projects will help our community save money – all the while contributing to London’s Net Zero goal.

“Thank you to all the community groups who have taken part so far – we hope the mayor responds to calls and builds on the success of his programme by opening funding for a seventh round.”
