Community groups invited to apply for slice of £120k Lee Valley Regional Park funding

The cash supports programmes that can drive change, encouraging ongoing physical activity across the park’s sports venues and 10,000 acres of green space, reports Kinga Plata

Haringey schools, charities and community groups have been invited to apply for a slice of £120,000 now available from Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA).

The money is part of LVRPA’s Community Access Fund, first launched in 2015, and will allow significantly more groups to benefit from it this year.

The scheme is designed to support organisations working with people and communities that are marginalised from society at a local level – whether that be a result of social, economic, or cultural reasons – and supports longer programmes that can drive change, encouraging ongoing physical activity across the park’s sports venues and 10,000 acres of green space.

The aim is to break down barriers to physical activity and access to outdoor areas by covering the cost of transport to the park or paying for access and activities.

Since its launch, the Community Access Fund has supported hundreds of community groups and given them the chance to enjoy experiences throughout the park’ sports venues and open spaces with the support of professional coaches and instructors.

LVRPA is now inviting not-for profit, registered charity, voluntary, school and community groups to get in touch and see how they could benefit from this year’s fund.

Alongside the fund, LVRPA also runs an ‘Active Communities Grant Scheme’. The scheme is tailored towards groups interested in long term projects and initiatives which increase physical activity and achieve greater social benefits. It is designed to work with organisations supporting individuals and communities that are somehow marginalised from society for social, economic or cultural reasons.

Shaun Dawson, LVRPA chief executive said: “We know how vitally important it is for all communities to have access to open space, sports and leisure opportunities.

“This year we are reaffirming our commitment to breaking down barriers for communities by increasing our funding for those people who, for reasons of cost or circumstance, may not otherwise be able to visit Lee Valley Regional Park and take advantage of the fabulously diverse opportunities it offers.”
