Funding of almost £1million has been confirmed for improvements to a “much-loved” museum in Tottenham.

Bruce Castle Museum is set to have a series of restructuring and refurbishment works done, including to the east wing, plaster repairs, new exhibition lighting, and decoration.

Funding is coming from Arts Council England’s Cultural Investment Fund, plus Haringey Council as part of a match-funding agreement, with a combined £916,147 now available to spend on the restoration work.

Over recent years feasibility studies and condition surveys have been carried out on the museum building, which is said to be one of the “two largest Tudor houses remaining in the Greater London area”, to help identify issues.

Haringey Council’s assistant director for culture and creativity, Kenneth Tharp CBE, said: “Bruce Castle is a much-loved landmark and very much part of our local and national heritage as a Grade 1-listed manor house that dates back to the 16th Century.

“We really appreciate the funding and support from the Cultural Investment Fund and Arts Council England for this restoration project. Despite the challenging financial environment faced by all councils, Haringey has protected our investment in Bruce Castle to provide significant match funding for the project, which will improve accessibility at one of our major tourist attractions and help safeguard its future.

“With Bruce Castle being home to the borough’s Museum and Archive, it brings huge value to our local community here in Haringey, as well as to its many visitors from around the world.

“The historical artefacts and collections at Bruce Castle are fascinating and unique. They’re of national significance so it’s important they have a future-proof home that’s fit for purpose for many more years – and generations – to come.”
