Andrew Krokou joined Haringey Council in 1971 as a Labour ward councillor in West Green and was the first of Cypriot origin, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter
Tributes have been paid to a long-serving former Haringey councillor – the first of Cypriot origin – after he passed away.
Andrew Krokou first joined Haringey Council in 1971 as a Labour ward councillor in West Green. He then went on to represent Noel Park and Stroud Green, serving on the council until 2006.
Council leader Peray Ahmet thanked the “dedicated ward councillor” on social media for “paving the way” for so many.
She said: “Andrew Krokou was the first councillor of Cypriot origin back in the 1970s. An absolute legend in Haringey who never stopped giving.”
A former teacher, Andrew sat on several committees and maintained a strong interest in education.
He was also chair of the Alexandra Palace and Park Board, and supported local charity Tottenham District Charity as well as football club Tottenham Hotspur.
In a tribute written for London-based Cypriot newspaper Parikiaki, Catherine West, the former Hornsey and Wood Green MP and parliamentary candidate for Hornsey and Friern Barnet, said: “Andy will forever be a part of the history of Haringey Labour and the old Hornsey and Wood Green Constituency Labour Party.
“His was a life well lived, one dedicated to leaving the world a better place than he found it.”
Andrew is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren.
