Tottenham pupil praised by London mayor for 100% seven-year attendance record

Marco Simms didn’t miss a day of school at Devonshire Hill Primary between 2017 and 2024

A Tottenham primary school pupil has been praised for his “incredible achievement” of not missing a single day of primary school.

Marco Simms attended The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School every day between September 2017 and July 2024 and was praised by his headteacher for the achievement – as well as the mayor of London.

In an end-of-year ceremony at the school Marco was presented with a certificate as well as a football signed by Manchester United star Mason Mount.

Headteacher Julie D’Abreu congratulated Marco and said: “On behalf of the governing body, staff and families at our school I would like to congratulate Marco and his family.

“What a fantastic example you set for those children following in your footsteps. We wish him the best of luck in his new secondary school and hope to hear of even more fantastic achievements as his learning journey continues.

“Congratulations Marco, your family, friends and the Devonshire Hill community are extremely proud of you!”

Marco explained why he was so committed to his studies and said: “It is important to go to school every day, for better education, and to be super successful like a footballer or an engineer. You should just really enjoy school, when you leave primary school you will miss it and you can’t go back.”

The Mayor of London’s Office at City Hall later added their congratulations and said in a statement to the school: “The mayor and all of us here in his children and young Londoners team are thrilled to hear about such an exemplary attendance record and the recognition he has received at your school.

“Marco’s dedication and commitment to learning is truly commendable. His perseverance, especially during the challenging times of the pandemic, speaks volumes about his character and the support of his family. Marco’s story is indeed inspiring and serves as a shining example for all of our young Londoners.

“We are proud to have such outstanding young people in our community and wish Marco continued success throughout his education. “
