The microblogging platform offers an alternative to X, which has become dominated by misinformation and bigotry under owner Elon Musk

Haringey Community Press is now available to follow on Bluesky, a microblogging social media site that is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to X (formerly Twitter).
British users of X have been leaving the platform this month after the social media site’s billionaire owner Elon Musk promoted the idea of “civil war” in the UK and shared fake news about the far-right riots to his millions of followers.
Bluesky is an X alternative that operates in a similar way but is not currently dominated by trolls, misinformation and bigotry. Bluesky is “decentralised” and places far less emphasis on algorithms for sharing posts, allowing users to curate their own feeds.
HCP now auto-posts all stories to both X and Bluesky. While the paper will not be leaving X at the current time, it will not be monitoring the platform closely as it did in the past. HCP can also still be found on Instagram and Facebook.
Yesterday (Monday 12th) The Guardian reported that some MPs were now quitting X in favour of other platforms in response to the proliferation of “hate and disinformation” on Musk’s site.
Edmonton MP Kate Osamor stated on 6th August, at the height of the violent disorder in the UK last week: “Under Elon Musk, X has become a space where racism, abuse, and disinformation are prevalent. The rise of the far-right underscores concerns about the impact of social media on public discourse and the responsibility of platform owners to regulate content effectively.”
X was approached for comment.
