Fly-tippers now face fines of up to £1,000 in Haringey

Haringey Council has increased the maximum penalty charged to people caught illegally dumping waste in the borough

Residents and businesses who dump waste in Haringey could now face fines of up to £1,000.

Haringey Council says it is intensifying its efforts to combat fly-tipping after calls from the community for tougher action.

The 150% rise in higher-rate penalties, from £400 to £1,000, serves as a “stark deterrent” according to the council.

Last year, more than 8,000 residents and businesses took part in a council waste survey, and 96% of participants agreed that fines should be imposed for fly-tipping, with 94% supporting similar penalties for dog fouling and littering.

The council says that littering fines will also increase, with a new maximum fine of £500 – an increase of more than 230%.

Seema Chandwani, cabinet member for tackling inequality and resident services, said: “I’m really pleased the government has allowed councils to increase fines for dumping.

“Residents are sick and tired of seeing waste dumped around our lovely borough and strongly support tougher action. Working with them, we want to tackle this challenge head-on and ensure that public spaces remain free from litter and waste.

“We hope these increased penalties will act as a deterrent and punish people who commit this awful crime.”

Haringey residents who have bulky items they wish to dispose of can use the council’s bulky waste collection service, with prices starting from £20.
