Choosing your tree

A Christmas Tree brings the excitement and magic of Christmas into your home.  However, there are a number of things to consider when choosing your perfect tree.

The first is to decide where your tree will be placed.  And if you are using mains powered tree lights, remember to place it near a plug socket.

Then choose a tree that fits your available height and space.  Capital Gardens recommend that there is about 40 cm between the top of the tree and the ceiling, once the stand and tree-top decoration are in place.

Festive Sparkle

Tree decoration is very much a personal choice, but some simple tips can make whatever you plan to be more impactful.

Think of your Christmas tree decorations as wallpaper!  That is, with a repeat pattern and using the same baubles two or three times up and down the tree.  For easy placement, try removing the metal hook from the bauble, place it over a branch, and reattach the bauble to secure it.  Baubles swaying on ribbons are good too.

Place plainer baubles closer to the tree trunk and the more decorative ones nearer the tips of the branches. And buy more baubles than you think you might need…  The same for the lights too, as it is easy to underestimate.

Position your lights up and down the branches and not around the tree, as this helps to retain the magical shape of the tree.

Looking after your tree

With the right care, a cut Christmas tree should last around four weeks; with a pot grown being everlasting.  The most important thing to remember is to not place your tree too close to a radiator or open fire, as this will cause excessive moisture loss and a speedier needle drop.

Start by sawing around 2.5cm from the bottom of your cut tree.  This removes any hardened sap and allows the tree to absorb water better and stay greener.  Do not plant your cut tree in sand or soil, as it can reduce the water uptake.  A strong strong supportive stand with a reservoir of water works best, especially with daily water top-ups.  For Pot Grown trees, if possible position them in a cooler room and again water daily.

Capital Gardens care about our trees, so please return your Pot Grown Tree to us by the 15th January for it to be replanted in a woodland.   As a thank you, you will receive a voucher for 20% off your next purchase, valid until the end of February 2025.
