The pair were originally convicted of attempted murder in 2017 but the victim has since died from injuries connected to the shooting

Two men have been charged with murder following the death of a man shot in Turnpike Lane in 2016.

On Tuesday, 30th August 2016, Joel Bempah-Cumberbatch, aged 25, was shot in the street at around 3.22pm. He was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his head.

His injuries left him with significant brain damage and on 20th September 2022, he sadly died.

In 2017 two men were convicted of attempting to murder Joel and were sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 13 years. But after Joel’s death, detectives submitted a further file to the Crown Prosecution Service and this week Jason Diur Kota, aged 29, and Denzican Karadag, aged 28, appeared at Highbury Magistrates Court in relation to murder charges.

The pair appeared at the Central Criminal Court on Tuesday (5th) and a trial date was set for 16th February 2026. They will next appear at the Old Bailey on 21 May 2025.
