An appeal for volunteers has been issued by the people behind a new community cinema project in Haringey.

Haringey Community Cinema (HCC) is inspired by Brixton Community Cinema, founded by Abiba Coulibaly in 2022. The initiative is aimed at bringing residents of Haringey and surrounding areas together through film.

Rémy Twahirwa, one of HCC’s founders, explained: “Our mission is to showcase films that challenge, inspire, and spark critical reflection—films that make us think and act.

“In a time of rising living costs and persistent barriers for marginalised communities in producing and accessing films that reflect their experiences and aspirations, we are committed to making our screenings free or pay-as-you-can.

“We’re currently looking for volunteers to help organise our first programme and support with various tasks, including promotion and fundraising.”

HCC is seeking both regular volunteers to provide support with logistics before and during events, as well as people willing to join its programming and management committee to help select films, book spaces, promote screenings, fundraise, and “shape the cinema’s future”.
