A crowdfunder has been launched to support the creation of a new boardwalk which will help open up access to a wildlife habitat within a Haringey park.

The Friends of Alexandra Park voluntary group, alongside the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, has launched the crowdfunding appeal to raise £10,000 for the boardwalk through the park’s wetlands area.

They hope the new facility, if built, will improve accessibility and enable more visitors to experience an important wildlife habitat in the south-east corner of the park, where there is already a birdwatching platform.

The Friends of Alexandra Park group hopes to reach its £10,000 target by Monday, 15th June.

All public donations made during the campaign period will be match-funded, where every £1 donated becomes £2.

Patricia Moody, chair of the Friends of Alexandra Park, said: “By installing a boardwalk, we are opening access to the wetlands, making this beautiful part of the park accessible to every member of our community.

“As we celebrate 20 years of the Friends of Alexandra Park, we are proud to mark this milestone by fundraising for a lasting community project that people can enjoy for generations to come. Every pound raised will help fund another plank on the boardwalk and bring us one step closer to creating a more inclusive and welcoming wetlands experience for everyone.”

The boardwalk project forms part of the park’s wider wetlands and rewilding programme, which aims to create healthier habitats for birds, amphibians, insects, aquatic wildlife and native plants, while helping improve water management and reduce flooding in the park.

Earlier phases of the wetlands project received support from City Hall’s Rewild London Fund as part of a longer-term vision for the ongoing future development of the wetlands area.

Mark Evison, head of park and environmental sustainability at Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, added:“The wetlands are becoming an increasingly important natural habitat within Alexandra Park, supporting biodiversity and improving climate resilience across the site.

“This campaign will help create safer and more accessible routes to the wetlands and birdwatching areas, including people with mobility needs, and encouraging more visitors to connect with nature and explore wildlife in the park.

“It highlights the positive impact Alexandra Park’s open green spaces can have on both wildlife and people.”
