Council issues statement on second Covid-19 lockdown

The leader of Haringey Council has pledged to support communities as the borough prepares for lockdown. 

Cllr Joseph Ejiofor said the council would “work tirelessly” to ensure communities have as much support as possible over the coming weeks and urged people to act together to stop the spread of Covid-19. 

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Friday 30th October that England would be placed under a second lockdown, meaning non-essential businesses will be forced to close their doors and people told to stay at home except for specific purposes such as to exercise or shop for necessities.  

The lockdown is expected to run from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December – although some ministers have suggested it could be extended if the virus is not brought under control.

Cllr Ejiofor said: “I understand the concerns that many of our residents will have following the announcement of the new tougher restrictions due to come in on Thursday. 

“However, with Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions rising in London, it is absolutely essential that we all act now together to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. We must protect the health of our loved ones, and our fellow Haringey residents, from this virus that continues to take lives. 

“I know the prime minister’s announcement will have a real impact on our communities and businesses yet again. I want to assure you that we – along with other London boroughs, our partners and our amazing community groups – will be working tirelessly to do all we can to ensure our communities have as much support as possible at this challenging time. You are not alone. 

“We have said this time and time again – as councils continue to step up for our communities during this pandemic, we desperately need central government to stick to its promise to fund local authorities properly, so that we can keep supporting those who most need our help. 

“Our communities, residents and businesses have pulled together fantastically so far, and I have been so inspired by this unity here in Haringey. As we face this next challenging period, I would urge everyone to please keep it up, follow the rules, protect each other and the NHS.”
