Haringey Council is consulting on a plan to reduce motor traffic and make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists, reports Simon Allin, Local Democracy Reporter

Three schemes designed to cut air pollution and rat-running could be rolled out in the borough – including two in Tottenham – after Haringey Council announced a new public consultation.

Town hall chiefs this week launched its initial plans for low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs). They aim to reduce reliance on cars for short journeys, boost walking and cycling, and tackle air pollution, improving quality of life in the process and helping Haringey become a zero-carbon borough.

LTNs involve closing road entrances using bollards, box planters, camera traps and similar measures, to prevent through-traffic on residential streets, dubbed ‘rat running’.

The introduction of LTNs in neighbouring Enfield has been criticised by some residents, however, who have complained of more traffic and pollution on main roads outside the LTN area, coupled with long delays to journeys.

Haringey’s plan is to roll out LTNs in the St Ann’s and Bruce Grove areas of Tottenham, as well as in Bounds Green, adjacent to the Bowes Park scheme in Enfield borough.

Matt White, cabinet member for planning and strategic transport, said: “The launch of this engagement exercise around the introduction of LTNs is a step in the right direction for reducing carbon emissions in our borough, promoting the health and safety of our community and making our neighbourhoods more pleasant places to live.

“We’re keen to hear residents’ views because we want to shape any proposed works to suit the needs of local people – ultimately the people who will be most affected.”
