Over £200,000 fines issued to ‘rogue landlords’ in Haringey

The fines were given to landlords who failed to correctly licence their houses if they had multiple occupants

Haringey Council has revealed that landlords across the borough who failed to licence their houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) have been collectively issued £207,500 in fines.

A licence is required for HMO properties in which there are three or more occupants not from the same household who share facilities. As of this month, 59 warnings have been given to landlords without the correct HMO licence; 43 resulted in fines.

Landlords renting their HMO without the correct licence can be ordered by court to pay back rent to tenants.

Cllr Sarah Williams, cabinet member for housing services, private renters and planning, said: “We will do everything in our power to protect our residents in the private rented sector in Haringey. Our HMO licensing scheme provides us with an even better platform to do this.

“Whilst we continue this journey to improve housing standards across the borough, we will fight for renters’ rights and ensure residents across Haringey live in homes that are well managed, of good quality and most of all, safe.

“As shown with this case, landlords who fail to comply will face tough enforcement action. Rogue landlords will not be tolerated in Haringey.”
