Tottenham rail worker saves person having heart attack

Sampras Wanliss has won the National Rail Lifesaver Award, reports Olivia Opara

A railway employee based in Tottenham has received an award for his life saving actions.

Last week, local resident Sampras Wanliss won the National Rail Lifesaver Award after he came to the aid of a customer having a heart attack on a platform at New Cross Station. Sampras, who works for the Southeastern Railway had ensured that the customer was breathing and their condition remained fine whilst corresponding with emergency services during the incident. He also communicated with the train signaller on the platform to try and run trains on another platform.

Sampras told HCP that he is delighted to have received the lifesaver award: “Of course the most important thing is that the man I helped was able to get the medical care he needed and thankfully made a good recovery. Whilst the actions I took were really all in a day’s work, the National Rail Awards are prestigious and I am honoured to have been recognized in this way.”

Sampras said: “I would also like to congratulate my two Southeastern colleagues for their Lifesaver Awards – I’m proud to work for an organisation where so many people go above and beyond to help customers – whatever their needs.”

Southeastern’s managing director Steve White said: “Our goal is to build a better, more reliable and sustainable railway and these awards recognise the work our team is putting into that.”
