London Fire Brigade issues smoking warning after South Tottenham flat blaze

Firefighters are issuing a reminder about smoking cigarettes safely after a fire in South Tottenham last week.

Part of a fourth-floor tower block flat in Albert Road was damaged by the fire last Thursday (18th). The flat’s balcony was destroyed by fire but there were no reports of any injuries.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of a cigarette.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) received more than ten 999 calls about the fire.

LFB was called at 8.12pm and the fire was extinguished by 9.05pm. Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters from Tottenham, Stoke Newington and Holloway fire stations attended the scene, alongside a 32-metre turntable ladder from Tottenham Fire Station.

An LFB spokesperson said: “If you smoke it is vitally important you stub it right out, preferably in an ashtray.

“Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire as you don’t know what it may land on which could potentially start a fire.

“Firefighters recommend that you have a look at our online Home Fire Safety Checker to make sure there are no hidden hazards in your home.

“The online tool will ask you a series of questions that will help us work out the level of risk in your home, or the home of someone you care for. It only takes a few minutes to get tailored advice to keep yourself and loved ones safe from fire.”
