A developer has submitted an application to demolish and replace a renowned care home in Highgate.

Highgate Care Ltd has proposed building a new 50-bed care home and a residential building comprising nine flats on site of the now closed Mary Feilding Guild, a care home established in 1877 and home to literary figures and activists.

The sale of the site, which was owned by the guild, took place in 2021 and caused controversy as the new owner, Mitesh Dhanak, who operates Highgate Care, gave the remaining residents, some of whom were over 90 years old, three months to vacate the premises.

At the time local MP Catherine West protested the move and presented a petition to parliament to help raise awareness of the situation and support for the last remaining residents.

A previous application for the site, located at 103-107 North Hill, proposed a 70-bed care home and was granted in 2022, but the number has now been reduced to 50 on this new application.

The nine flats consist of five one bedroom flats, three two-beds and one three-bed. The two structures will be separate with the flats in a three-to-four storey building and the care home in a three-storey building.

The plans propose ten parking spaces for the care home and two for the flats. Some of the amenities of the care home include a hydro pool, salon, foyer/central hub, gym/physio room, lounge and dining rooms and consulting rooms.
