The Highgate arts venue is well known as a “home for creativity, community, and bold artistic expression”

A Highgate arts centre that’s been a “home for creativity, community, and bold artistic expression” since 1975 marked its 50th anniversary with a five-hour festival.
From its beginnings as a community centre to becoming a leading venue for contemporary circus and performance, Jacksons Lane has “championed innovative work and nurtured generations of artists” over the past five decades.
On Saturday (28th June) a celebration event was held at the venue in Archway Road. It was attended by Haringey mayor Ahmed Mahbub and Tulip Siddiq, the MP for Hampstead and Highgate, among other distinguished guests.
The “joyous and packed day” included a circus parade, community stage spotlighting local talent, a heritage trail, pop-up cabaret and circus performances, a showcase of Jacksons Lane’s 50-year history, plus a barbecue.
Attendees also got a first glimpse of a pink plaque in honour of the significant contribution made to the local arts scene by the late Nicky Gavron. A former deputy mayor of London who sadly died at the age of 82 last August, Gavron co-founded Jacksons Lane and was a staunch champion for the Highgate-based arts venue itself.
