A house in Tottenham Hale with no working smoke alarm went up in flames yesterday (Monday 16th).

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze at the property in Antill Road at 5:17pm.

Half of the ground floor and roof, as well as part of the first floor and external fascia were destroyed by the fire, but there were no reports of any injuries.

London Fire Brigade has blamed the lack of a smoke detector for the spread of the blaze. They said it was started accidentally and is believed to have been caused by a defect in a fridge freezer.

A spokesperson said: “This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your property.

“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.”

The fire was extinguished by 6:41pm.
