Joe Ives, Local Democracy Reporter, provides live election updates as 57 councillors are due to be elected to Haringey Council by the end of Friday afternoon

Hello and welcome to the live blog on the Haringey Council election count from the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).
Like all London boroughs, Haringey went to the polls yesterday (Thursday 7th). Counting officially started at 10am today (Friday 8th) with the first results expected to come through mid-afternoon.
At the 2022 local election in Haringey, Labour won 50 seats – but a series of defections, plus a by-election loss last year, a suspension and a recent resignation, have reduced the party’s number of councillors down to 43.
The count is being carried out in the dramatic background of Alexandra Palace, or ‘Ally Pally’. The next few hours will show if the results will be equally momentous for the council, with Labour having been in power here since 1971.
Live updates will appear here. A full news report will be available separately once the final results have come in.

16:14 – GREEN GAIN
Greens take both seats off Labour in Hermitage & Gardens (2)
16:17 – GREEN GAIN
Could something huge be happening here? St Ann’s returns two Greens, taking one from Labour.
16:20 – ANOTHER GREEN GAIN
Green takes the two Seven Sisters seats off Labour.
Six seats counted, six wins for Greens so far.
16:55 – LIB DEM GAIN
Lib Dems take both seats at Muswell Hill, taking one from Labour
16:58 – LABOUR GET SOME SEATS
Two Labour councillors for Alexandra Park ward. They take one seat off the Lib Dems.
17:50 – LIB DEM GAIN: Muswell Hill
The Lib Dems get the two seats, taking one previously held by Labour
17:52 – GREENS TAKE ANOTHER THREE SEATS
Labour lose all three of their seats for Tottenham Hale Ward.
Ruth Gordon, sitting cabinet member got over 1,000 votes – but still loses hear place on the council.
Something definitely seems to be happening here…
17:52 – Tally so far
Greens: 9
Labour: 2
Lib Dems: 2
18:39 – LIB DEMS TAKE CROUCH END
Crouch End
Lib Dems take all three seats in Crouch End, with sitting leader of the opposition and Lib Dem councillor Luke Cawley-Harrison getting the most votes of any candidate so far: 2,338.
18:50 – LABOUR HOLD NORTHUMBERLAND PARK
Labour have kept all three seats at Northumberland Park ward . Perhaps a case of left leaning voters splitting their votes here. Two Haringey Socialist Aliance Candidates stood, as did one Green.
Green canndidate.Jayon Henriques got 1,135 votes less than 100 votes behind his closesr Labour competitor
19: 10 – WHITE HART LANE = MORE LABOUR PAIN
Greens take two of the three seats off Labour, who hold one.
19: 15 – PORTILLO MOMENT: COUNCIL LEADER LOSES HER SEAT
Peray Ahmet, Leader of the Labour council has lost her seat…
Greens take all three spots at Noel Park Ward – at the cost of three sitting Labour members including the Labour Council leader Peray Ahmet. More to follow on this particular story…
19:57 – Four more wards called, more Green gains
This eco-friendly steam train shows few signs of stopping yet. Four wards called (back-to-back) with Greens making big gains again. They take another six seats off Labour.
20:15 – Main points so far
- Greens take all three seats from Labour on Harringay Ward
- Labour hold on to all three seats in Hornsey
- Labour also maintain all three seats in South Tottenham
- Greens take all three seats from Labour in Tottenham Central
21:10 – All the results from the past (chaotic) hour
Labour win both seats in Bounds Green, taking one previously held by the Green Socialist Alliance.
Lib Dems keep two seats on Highgate but lose a third to the Greens.
Stroud Green elected three Labour members in 2022. One, Alexandra Worrell, switched to become an independent – now all three seats have gone to the Green Party.
All the same party-wise (it had to happen somewhere!) at Woodside: 2xLabour 1xGreen.
Labour lose one seat in Bruce Castle to make it 2x Labour and 1x Green
21:22 – ALL EYES ON FORTIS GREEN
This feels like added time in a five-goal thriller. The Greens need just one more seat for the magic number of 29 to win a majority.
The as-it-stands table:
- Greens: 28
- Labour: 19
- Lib Dems: 7
There’s one more ward left, Fortis Green, currently made up of one Lib Dem, one Independent, and one Green.
It’s the penalty shootout – delayed, it seems by a recount.
22:20 – NO OVERALL CONTROL
The Greens miss out on a historic majority by one seat as Labour take two in Fortis Green, with the Lib Dems taking the third.
Greens still the largest party and have ended unbroken Labour control of Haringey Council, dating back over half a centuary to 1971.
The Haringey Greens have no official leader – so much still remains up in the air. They are expected to elect one in the coming weeks.
