Residents at Protheroe House in Tottenham have planted a cherry tree in their sensory garden to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
This year marks the Queen becoming the first British monarch to reign for 70 years. The senior residents at One Housing’s senior living scheme were first in the local area to plant the tree, known as Prunus Amanogowa or ‘Flagpole Cherry’, to celebrate the occasion.
The planting was part of the ‘Queen’s Green Canopy’ (QGC) Jubilee initiative. QGC encouraged members of the public to enhance the environment by planting a tree during the official planning season between October and March. The initiative will commence again this coming October.
The cherry tree is perfect for smaller urban gardens, providing flowers and food for bees and birds throughout the year, as well as fragrant cherry blossom in spring for the residents to enjoy. The location of the tree is pinned to an interactive map to mark the event.
The Deputy Lieutenant for Haringey, Captain Peter Baker (Royal Navy Reserve Officers Decoration) attended the ceremony on behalf of the Queen. On the day of the tree planting ceremony, Captain Baker said: “I look forward to seeing the tree on the interactive map and to watch it grow in the coming years. It was a pleasure to meet you all and see the amazing work you do for your residents.”
QGC will dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the UK and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign.
