A space for plants and people to grow

After months of work from the Grow N22 team, led by the tireless Luke Newcombe, the new Haringey Learning Partnership (HLP) garden is officially open.

Residents of Commerce Road in Wood Green will remember when this area of land was neglected and used only for fly-tipping. When social enterprise gardeners Grow N22 first came to have a look at the grounds of Commerce House, they found old tyres and a rotten sofa among the overgrown weeds.

One of HLP’s students worked alongside Grow N22 to design the new garden space and, over the year, we have welcomed a whole host of volunteers from different organisations to work on transforming the grounds.

In March, HLP and Grow N22 hosted a grand opening party to celebrate the culmination of this project, which is set to bring a vast array of benefits to students, staff and the local environment. On the day, we welcomed staff, students, families and the local community to share this special event.

Two of Haringey’s former mayors, Stephen and Jennifer Mann, were kind enough to cut the red ribbon and welcome guests in for the very first time. A table laden with cake was set up on the main lawn, accompanied by with a balloon-filled gazebo and origami hanging fruit created by HLP’s talented art students.

The new garden was designed to provide wildlife with a unique biodiverse space, while providing visitors such as students and teachers with deep sensory effects and seasonal eye-catching colour and pollination zones for bees.

The aim of the garden is provide a place of wonder, while providing calming and therapeutic uses to its human visitors. As the new garden develops over the year, the plants’ colour effects will change from blue flowering in the spring to a vibrant structure taking shape and sporadic sparkles of colour appearing as the weeks march towards the summer.

We look forward to hearing about visitors’ experiences with the garden and how they use it as space to unwind.
