Even though all primary pupils are currently receiving free school meals local schools receive extra funding based on how many are eligible

Haringey families are being given the opportunity to ease their financial worries and support their children’s education by applying for free school meals.

As the new academic year begins, primary schools across the borough can receive additional funding that will be used to enhance teaching and learning resources, ultimately improving educational outcomes for students.

Following the mayor of London’s recent announcement, all primary pupils in Haringey will continue to receive free school meals throughout the 2024/25 academic year.

However, families who are eligible are still being urged to formally apply, even if their child automatically qualifies. This is essential for schools to unlock pupil premium funding, which amounts to up to £1,480 per eligible pupil—an increase of £25 from last year.

By applying for free school meals, parents and guardians will help their child’s school secure vital funding that can be used for essential items, enrichment activities, and to ease budget pressures, especially during this cost-of-living crisis with rising energy and food costs.

Zena Brabazon, cabinet member for children, schools, and families, at Haringey Council, said: “With backpacks and pencil cases ready for a new school year, we are committed to ensuring our students have the best education, resources, and support.

“One key way families can contribute to this is by applying for free school meals. By doing so, families can help unlock vital funding for our schools, which will play a significant role in supporting their education and giving them the platform they need to succeed.

“We understand the importance of creating the right environment for every child to thrive in their learning and the value of having a nutritious meal. The future of our young people is in our hands, and together, we can make a difference.”

Most schools in Haringey manage their own free school meals provision. If a child’s school is not on this list, parents should contact the school directly to apply. If a child’s school appears on this list, parents must apply for free school meals through Haringey Council, and which will assist with the process.

Additionally, eligible students may also qualify for a school clothing grant of £60, which helps cover the cost of school uniforms and shoes.
