A Tottenham pub will be screening a series of films around the theme of “love and obsession” this autumn – with added “immersive performances”.

The Film Tottenham showcase is taking place at The Beehive Pub in Stoneleigh Road and kicks off on Saturday, 18th October with a screening of Brief Encounter plus a live actor performance.

It forms part of the British Film Institute programme ‘Too Much: Melodrama on Film’, and also include screenings of classics such as Marnie, Romeo and Juliet, 500 Days of Summer, Blue Valentine, Black Swan and Neon Demon.

Supported by Film London, the BFI Film Audience Network and the National Lottery, the theme of love and obsession promises to shine through in the selected films.

According to the BFI: “The rare cinematic form concerned with women’s inner lives, these films span infidelity, motherhood and exploitation to capture our hearts and evoke our empathy.

“The legacy of early ‘women’s pictures’, created for female audiences with their favourite female stars, echoes across generations and around the world. As in life, these women do not always triumph. Imperfectly feminist yet endlessly relatable, their sensationalist struggles carry searing social commentary beneath their glossy veneer.

“In the coming months we will embrace the vivid visual language and heightened dramatics of melodrama, inviting you to leave your cynicism at the door and feel something.”

The film screenings will continue until the end of November. Early bird tickets are on sale now.

Film Tottenham is also hosting its annual film festival on Saturday, 4th October from 1.30pm, with 28 short films being screened in one day across a wide range of genres. Guests will have the opportunity to vote for a film to receive the ‘Audience’s Choice Award’.

A Bafta-winning director will be holding a Q&A at the film festival as well, giving audience members and filmmakers alike the opportunity to speak to someone successful in the film industry.

Organiser Adam Awni said: “I’m really proud that the backbone of Film Tottenham is screening films from first time filmmakers that may have made a film on a shoestring budget to films from seasoned Bafta winners. It’s amazing when we get these different levels of experience in a room together to showcase their work.”

The short films will be screened on a 150-inch screen in the function room of The Beehive. Tickets are £5 for a category or £20 for a day ticket.
