A social enterprise is offering support for local French-speaking asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants – starting with an event in Tottenham next month.

Through language and employment partnerships with local charities, Global French Academy (GFA) is hosting a workshop on Saturday, 18th April at ArcTottenham in Watermead Way, Tottenham Hale.

The workshop aims to support French-speaking residents with English language learning and comprehension, with classes being led by volunteers of the charity who speak French.

Within this workshop, GFA will partner with local charities to boost asylum seekers’ job prospects, employment guidance, and access to local services, as well as to create a safe space for discussion with community connection and integration.

The event runs from 12pm to 5pm and will begin with a session on a variety of topics run by GFA chair Hermond Osango, with help from volunteers.

Hermond told Haringey Community Press: “The aim is to support French-speaking residents with English learning and employment guidance.”

Exercises and interactive discussions, questions and answers will follow regarding immigration and integration issues that the asylum seekers are facing, and the charities will be there listening to how to aid them and improve their services.

GFA intends for this event to mark the beginning of a series of regular workshops across Haringey and the borough’s French-speaking communities.

With increased volunteer involvement, expanded partnerships with charities and local businesses, and growing community support, the organisation aims to establish a sustainable programme that empowers French-speaking asylum seekers and fosters meaningful social integration.
