The Highgate Society has promised a “surprise celebrity guest” at the event on 18th April

Local people are being invited to celebrate 60 years of the Highgate Society at a special anniversary dinner next month.
The event takes place at The Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution on Saturday, 18th April, with “an unforgettable evening of fine dining, conversation, and celebration” being planned.
There will even be a “surprise celebrity guest speaker”.
Exploring more about the history of the residents’ group, the society’s most recent newsletter explained: “The Highgate Society’s history shows that grassroots democracy depends on active engagement.
“The society grew out of opposition to central government traffic plans that took little account of local views. Large public meetings enabled residents to debate the proposals that would have reshaped the area: a campaign that quickly gained national attention.
“Similar approaches were used in other campaigns such as Athlone House, where organised community support strengthened the society’s advocacy at a twelve-day appeal inquiry in 2015 and brought rigorous scrutiny to plans for a major local landmark.
“This engagement has taken many practical forms. Members have worked with councillors, officers and other local groups to test proposals and act as an advocate for Highgate. Over time, sustained engagement has helped ensure that local voices are firmly represented when important decisions are made.”
