Appointment widely praised by Spurs fans

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been officially appointed as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager.

The 52-year-old replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked on Monday following a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United.

Conte has signed a contract until 2023 with an option to extend the deal. Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur’s official website, Conte said: “I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

“I can’t wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.”

Tottenham’s managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, added: “We are delighted to welcome Antonio to the club. His track record speaks for itself, with vast experience and trophies in both Italy and England.

“I know first-hand the qualities Antonio can bring to us, having worked with him at Juventus, and look forward to seeing his work with our talented group of players.”

Conte was heavily linked with the Spurs job in the summer but, following a convoluted manager search, the club settled on former Wolves boss Nuno. The Portuguese had a bright start, winning his first three league games, but results soon deteriorated.

Nuno’s reign never seemed to recover after Spurs suffered three consecutive heavy defeats in September to Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal. Wins over Aston Villa and Newcastle United brought temporary respite but performances were still unconvincing.

Tottenham regularly looked devoid of any gameplan going forward. Under Nuno they scored just nine goals in ten league games, the joint-second worst scoring total in the league.

Nuno was renowned for his ability to organise a defence during his time at Wolves but there was little evidence of this at Tottenham. After Spurs lost 3-0 at home to a Manchester United side that were beaten 5-0 in their previous game, it was clear that Nuno’s days as manager were numbered.

New boss Conte is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the world and has won league titles in five of his last seven seasons as a manager. His appointment has gained widespread approval from Spurs fans on social media.

Among those to praise the appointment was The Fighting Cock podcast, which posted on Twitter: “It’s still surreal that one of the best coaches in the world is now our manager. The next couple of years could be some of the most memorable we’ve had.”

Conte’s first game in charge will be Tottenham’s Europa Conference League fixture against Vitesse at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday. His first Premier League game will be away against Everton on Sunday.
