Young Haringey athletes win Jubilee trophy

Young Haringey athletes have won a city-wide sports competition for the second time.

On 18th July, London Youth Games announced that young athletes from across Haringey won the London Youth Games Jubilee Trophy 2023. Haringey won with 1007 points across 24 games with the Boccia, Girls cricket and girls hockey teams finishing in the top ten.

Under Haringey Sports Development Trust, the borough has been represented by young people in a number of sports competitions and is now looked as an example through the trust’s method of sport development and good practice of engaging young people and schools. The trust was established to encourage the education of young people through physical activity and sports development, providing opportunities and programmes in more than 25 sports.

Burk Gravis, founder of Haringey Sports Development Trust, said: “When the trust brought Haringey back into the games in 1995, we finished 31st but by delivering good old fashioned sports development in each sport we have shown London boroughs the formula of what success looks like to win the games when other boroughs wiped out sports development.”

The London Youth Games was launched in 1977 in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee – bringing young people across the 33 boroughs to compete in various sports. Points are awarded in every competition and each borough’s top 24 scores are added together.
