London Mets chair Joseph O’Connell on how the Finsbury Park-based baseball club has gone from strength to strength

Haringey boasts national sporting champions on the borough’s doorstep, and many of the people who walk through Finsbury Park each weekend may not even know it!
London Mets Baseball Club, which trains and plays at the park’s baseball fields, were recently crowned British baseball champions for the tenth consecutive year.
A decade at the top has made the Mets the team every other club in the country is trying to beat.
In 2026 we also tested ourselves against the best on the continent, finishing fourth in Europe, a remarkable result against teams from countries where baseball is far more established and far better funded.
The Mets will compete in the European Cup again in 2027, once more representing London and Haringey on the international stage.
Ten titles in a row is something every player, coach and supporter of this club can be proud of. But we’re just as proud that we’re a community club. We play in a public park, and our door is open to anyone who wants to give baseball a go.
That openness is at the heart of the club’s plans for the year ahead. Alongside our senior teams, the Mets run a youth programme for children aged from five to 16, introducing young people to hitting, throwing and catching in a fun, supportive setting.
The club’s women’s programme has also grown quickly and now has more than 80 members. Like the youth programme, it welcomes complete beginners, so no previous experience is needed.
People are sometimes put off because they think baseball is complicated, or that you need to have grown up with it, but you don’t. Plenty of our members started from scratch.
If you can turn up, you can learn, and you’ll find a friendly group of people waiting for you when you do.
The club sees its success on the field and its work in the community as part of the same story. The players who win national titles today train on the same fields where five-year-olds pick up a glove for the first time, and we hope that some of the next generation of champions will come from Haringey’s own schools and streets.
For anyone curious, the message is simple: come down to Finsbury Park, watch a session, and give it a try. Whether you want to play competitively, get fit, meet new people or find a new weekend activity for the kids, there’s a place for you at our club.
