Fortismere Community Symphony Orchestra will be performing classical music from Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, writes Taro Kaneko

A community orchestra is encouraging young people to enjoy a programme of classical music in Muswell Hill with free entry offered to under-18s.
The Fortismere Community Symphony Orchestra will be performing classical music from Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich at St Andrew’s Church on Sunday, 17th November.
The Fortismere Music Centre said that they wanted to invite young people to see the performance for free.
From The Purcell School for Young Musicians, Yazdi Madon will solo to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. The 17-year-old pianist said: “I have always wanted to perform this concerto with an orchestra and I am really excited to have been given this opportunity.”
Yazdi has won awards at national and internation competitions, coming first place at The European Piano Teachers Association UK competition and the Bromsgrove Young Musicians’ Platform.
The orchestra consists of players of all ages, including students, parents and teachers from Fortismere School, as well as members of the wider community in North London.
Conducting the orchestra will be Thomas Gregory, who has been its artistic director since 2013. He also directs and conducts ensembles for Haringey Music Service where he is currently head of strings.
The rest of the programme will see the orchestra perform Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and in the second half Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.
The performance will run from 7pm to 9pm on Sunday, 17th November at St Andrew’s Church, Alexandra Park Road (N10 2DD).
Entry is free for attendees under 18. Standard tickets will cost £16 on the door and on the day of the performance.
